For your search to begin, you must have one of the following information handy:

Go through the detailed guidelines below that will assist you in your search:
Search by Business Name
Step 1 – Visit the Tennessee Secretary of State website to go to the search page for finding registered business entities in the state. The search page looks something like the screenshot below.

- State of Formation
- Principal Office Address
- Registered Agent Information
In addition, the Certificate of Existence can be requested for a $20 fee.
Search by Control Number
If you have the control number assigned to the entity by the Secretary of State, you can enter the number in the search field.
Business Name Availability
Before forming a corporation or Limited Liability Company a name has to be chosen. This name has to be unique and no other registered entities can be using it. To check if the name is available, visit the Business Name Availability database.
The business name registration is different from business licensing in Tennessee. The Tennessee Department of Revenue has more information regarding Tennessee business licenses.
